The Project’s Chrissie Swan advocates for sobriety as she discloses she hasn’t had a drink in nine months ‘after giving it a fair nudge’ during Melbourne’s first lockdown when her ‘anxiety was by the roof’

Chrissie Swan spoke candidly about her decision to get sober during Thursday’s episode of The Project.

The 47-year-old TV personality revealed she hasn’t had a drink in nine months, and said she’d ‘recommend it’ to others.    

‘I really am reticent to be the poster girl for sobriety because it was a decision I made for myself after giving it a fair nudge in the first lockdown last year,’ she explained.

‘I haven’t had a drink in about nine months. I do recommend it,’ she began. 

‘If you’re thinking, “Oh, maybe I’m drinking a bit much or it’s not helping me anymore”, I think that’s the biggest thing I’ve taken from it, is that it didn’t help.’

Chrissie said if anything, alcohol only increased her feelings of anxiety around the pandemic and she stopped sleeping properly. 

‘With the pressures and anxieties and worries and being responsible for kids and their whole life has changed and you’re their parent, you feel enormous guilt, though it’s all out of your control,’ she continued.

‘I really am reticent to be the poster girl for sobriety because it was a decision I made for myself after giving it a fair nudge in the first lockdown last year,’ she explained

‘You kind of feel like having a few drinks will take the edge off, and a associate of drinks does, but ultimately it gets to the stage where it doesn’t help, and it certainly wasn’t helping me.

‘My anxiety was by the roof, I wasn’t sleeping properly because booze is terrible for sleep.’

The radio great number went on to say that giving up alcohol had only changed her life for the better, particularly while dealing with the uncertainty of the pandemic. 

‘I haven’t had a drink in about nine months. I do recommend it. If you’re thinking, “Oh, maybe I’m drinking a bit much or it’s not helping me anymore,” I think that’s the biggest thing I’ve taken from it, is that it didn’t help,’ she said

‘I really noticed a huge difference in my day-to-day positivity and ability to deal with the pandemic and the current changes to literally every part of our lives if I’m clear minded, and for me it’s been fantastic, a fantastic choice,’ she continued.

Chrissie finished by urging others to consider their alcohol intake and whether it was ‘the right time’ for them to quit.

She said it’s something people can only do for themselves, and additional: ‘You have to help yourself.’
