San Diego police probe fire pit gunfire

SAN DIEGO — A fight at one of the fire pits on Shelter Island led to a shootout that left three men wounded Saturday night, San Diego police said.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. at the popular weekend destination for fishing and bonfires, located off Shelter Island excursion on San Diego Bay.

It’s not however clear what started the fight, but two of the people involved in a heated argument ultimately pulled out guns and shot at each other, according to a San Diego Police Department news release. Three young men, ages 22, 23 and 24, were hurt.

Medics took all three men to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, according to police.

Video from 619 News Media and OnScene TV showed the men getting loaded into ambulances and at the minimum one man in handcuffs late Saturday evening, though police did not formally announce any arrests in the case.

A meaningful number of people were stuck without access to their bayfront hotel in the area, as officials shut down multiple parts of the active waterfront while they sorted by the crime scene. Officers went to nearby buildings to check for stray rounds, but did not closest find anything, San Diego Police Lt. Ken Impellizeri told OnScene.

San Diegan Antonio Hernandez said he arrived with a group of friends to fish on the pier near the scene of the shooting. They were waiting for a member of their group by the bathrooms when they heard a commotion. They watched as an argument escalated to blows, which “lasted for a minute or two” before they heard “a associate loud pops.”

“We look over and there’s someone on the ground,” Hernandez told FOX 5. “There’s a bunch of screaming, people running off the pier, all the gear was left and everything. People just dropped everything and came.”

Police said Sunday morning that there was no remaining danger to the public in the area.

Impellizeri assured residents that it was “not a mass shooting,” but an secluded fight between two groups. He additional, though, that it was “pretty concerning” that a gun battle would happen in such a popular area crowded with families.
