It is estimated that one billion people celebrate Earth Day every year.

In fact, the day is becoming more and more popular, with companies and institutions backing its message of a sustainable future and force for change.

Its origins started with one devastating ecological event over 50 years ago and has since ballooned into a global occurrence.

Each year, the day follows a different theme and 2022’s is “Invest in Our Planet.”

It hopes to encourage individuals, businesses and governments to invest in technological change that can help the planet.

As climate change concerns continue to rise, 2022 might be the perfect year to add Earth Day to your annual calendar.

What exactly is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event that helps promote environmental action, causes and foundations.

Over the time of the last decade, the day has become synonymous with action against climate change.

In 2016, the historic Paris Agreement, which was held to ensure countries limited their impact on global warming, was held on Earth Day.

When did Earth Day begin?

The first Earth Day took place after a devastating oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, in 1969.

According to EarthDay.org, US Senator Garlord Nelson wanted to rally environmental activism in a similar way anti-Vietnam War protests were gripping the USA at the time.

In 1970, the first official Earth Day took place.

It boasted 20 million participants across the USA, which as EarthDay.org states, was 10 per cent of the country at the time.

In 1990, the event spread beyond the USA to become an international event with 141 countries taking part.

How can you take part in Earth Day?

There will be countless events taking place across the globe on Earth Day in 2022.

The biggest of which will be in New York City, with governors closing down multiple streets on the Saturday following Earth Day to promote better air quality and environmental damage.

As promoted on EarthDay.org, there are many ways for you to get involved.

These events can be anything that contributes environmental change, from city clean-ups to family-friendly activities and entertainment.

A complete list can be found here, along with how you can register an event for next year.
