Don’t already Dare! What NOT to Do With SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

Traffic. Blame it on the traffic.

People with web sites know how vital traffic is. The importance of attracting traffic to web sites is already more imperative when there is a product or service to sell. When traffic can generate increased sales, some mischievous web site owners – instead of adhering faithfully to search engine optimization rules – include in search engine trickery. If we could call it search engine witchcraft we would. You wouldn’t believe what some people do to capture traffic. It’s like courting a lady with false, pompous charms. It doesn’t work.

They think search engines have no intelligence and sophistication. In fact, search engines nowadays – Google, Yahoo, MSN – have more “smarts” than average humans so don’t think you can outwit the cardinal rules of search engine optimization without getting on their radars. Google et al are one step ahead of Sherlock Holmes, and have tools that are sharper and sassier than the CIA’s or the KGB’s. Remember this and you won’t be stripped of your URL address.

So what should you NOT do to be labeled an undesirable alien on cyberspace?

The Big Don’ts:

* Don’t plagiarize content and pass it off as your own – one of the things that makes web sites earn respect and rank is good content. You may have heard that oft-repeated saying that cash is king on Wall Street, but on the Internet, content is king. If you have a web site that sells health supplements, for example, you want to have well-written and well-researched articles on health. Your articles are not only supposed to be well-written, but must also be timely. In other words, don’t cite a use from the Mayo Clinic archives of 1965! And if you’re selling supplements, don’t include an article that is irrelevant to health supplements – like hybrid cars. Hello?

* Don’t kill your content with an overdose of keywords – while keywords are the little darlings of search engines (keywords are the GPS of search engines – that’s how they find you), exaggerating their use will weaken the position of your web site. If your web site was about credit cards, for example, would you not tire your reader if every other sentence had the phrase “credit cards” popping out?

* Don’t complicate the engines’ search course of action by using too many frames. Dr. Michael Wilson, internet marketing strategist, says that the use of frames may be great for humans, but search engines can’t read Javascript or Flash. Here’s what Dr. Wilson says, “Some webmasters use frames, but frames can cause serious problems with search engines. already if search engines can find your content pages, they could be missing the meaningful navigation to help visitors get to the rest of your site. JavaScript and Flash navigation menus that appear when you hover are great for humans, but search engines don’t read JavaScript and Flash.”

* Don’t ignore useful SEO tools, if you want your web site to score high on rank and traffic. Technology is going at a much faster speed these days, so don’t let the competition catch you with your pants down because you didn’t want to use money on effective SEO tools. As the wise say, you “gotta use money to make money.” So invest in tools that will promote your web site better. For example WebPosition is a software that checks your site’s ranking vis-à-vis your competitors. There are other software programs that perform the same function. Go into Google and kind “SEO tools” and you’ll find a whole range to fill your tool box.

Of course, we can’t overlook the fact that if you’re new to SEO, you’d feel lost in building a truly specialized web site design. Some charge an arm and a leg, but you can nevertheless find others who do a great job at reasonable prices. A bit of research on the net won’t hurt, or rely on information-of-mouth referrals.
