15 University of Georgia History Highlights

The largest university in the country, the University of Georgia enrolls well over 30,000 students each year. The school is located in Athens, Georgia, which is about sixty miles from Atlanta. Not only is it the largest, but it also holds the distinction of being the oldest state-chartered university in the country. From this was born the system throughout the United States of public higher education.

1785- employing 40,000 acres set aside by the Georgia Legislature for an institution of higher learning, the Georgia General Assembly is the first state in the U.S. to charter a state supported college.

1802- the University of Georgia was truly established, with Abraham Baldwin as the founder.

1843- The studies were broadened to include the study of the law.

1872- Classes are again expanded to include the study of agriculture and mechanical arts, upon receiving federal funding.

1892- Georgia plays Auburn University in football for the first time, signaling the start of The thorough Souths Oldest Rivalry.

1893- Hostilities between UGA and Georgia Tech mark the start of the intense rivalry between the two schools, often referred to as Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate! (Georgia lost, 28-6).

1900- The graduating class had less than sixty graduates.

1915- Georgia wins the game against the University of Florida, at the first matchup in Jacksonville, for the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

1919- The first female, Mary E. Creswell, graduated from the University with a degree in Home Economics. She would later serve as dean of the school.

1920- The Bulldog was hypothesizedv as the mascot.

1929- The first football game was played in Sanford Stadium, against Yale University.

1942- The University of Georgia Bulldogs won their first Southeastern Conference Championship!

1961- The University was officially integrated- its first two African-American students became a physician and an award winning journalist.

1996- UGA is great number to several Olympic events, which were part of the 96 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta.

2007- Georgias athletic teams, which include football, baseball, basketball, swimming, track, and gymnastics have won a combined 127 SEC titles, and 31 National Championships!

The University of Georgias long and colorful history has contributed to a variety of high traditions, particularly for football fans. UGA, the Georgia Mascot dog, is a chief example. UGA, currently in his sixth incarnation, as UGA VI. UGA is present at all Georgia sporting events, and is particularly important to football fans. UGA V was one of the most well known and most highly publicized mascots, and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the NBC Nightly News, and several other media spots.

Georgia fans are some of the most dedicated, intense fans in football. The exciting marching band, successful athletic teams, and academic honors are just a few of the special aspects of the University of Georgia, and what makes it, according to US News and World Reports, one of the top twenty public universities in the country.
